BOOK REVIEW: The Prince of Decorators
In 1938, Sybil Colfax invited John Fowler to join her prestigious design firm. Until that time, he had been a painter for a firm that faked and restored wallpaper. English country homes became his signature brought forth by his enthusiasm, attention to detail, color sense and his eye for scale. After Sybil's death, he then partnered with an American, Nancy Lancaster. Along with the English country style , they invented the distressing of furniture and the first shabby chic look creating a unique combination of style that has lasted for fifty years. This beautiful book is not only a biography of Fowler's life, but an illustration of his timeless work. This book is for the traditionalist decorator and should be treasured as a testament to true English style design.
