Playgrounds come in all shapes and sizes, and they're likely the first place your sense of adventure was tested . . . and further cultivated.

For the outdoor aficionado, what first started as an obsession for see-saws, swing sets, slides, jungle gyms, and sandboxes, has since turned into an instinctive passion for adventure by means of a different type of playground -- the natural playground.

Whether by trail, rock, water, snow or air, where has your obsession for adventure taken you? What's your photographic definition of Living the Dream? Skiing or snowboarding in the Alps or at your local hill? Climbing in Thailand or at the backyard crag? Mountain Biking in British Columbia or on your neighborhood trails? Surfing pristine Tahiti barrels or a quiet home break? Kayaking through Patagonia or along your favorite coastline?

For those passionate about their adventure and their photography, show us the photographic moments you've captured that will inspire our next adventure . . . in The Natural Playground

CALL TO ARTISTS: Vendors for the 50th Annual Art in the Park Festivals in Rutland

Calling all fine artists and craftspeople! The Chaffee Art Center is pleased to announce its 50th Annual Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft Festivals for 2011. The Chaffee is currently looking for vendors for the August 13-14 and October 8-9, 2011 shows. We are seeking fine art of any media and totally handcrafted items of good taste and high quality. Artisans and craftspeople who would like to demonstrate their craft are encouraged to do so as well.

In honor of the 50th Anniversary Celebration, refinements have been made to elevate the shows to become signature events for the Central Vermont area. New collaborations with local merchants, new partnerships with arts organizations for marketing and promotion, an increased number of high-end buyers in attendance, and new vendors who represent a range of quality products are exciting aspects to expect in 2011! Vendors will be pleased to know that we are convening a panel of professional jurists who are well versed in the various mediums represented. This will ensure a high degree of quality from the artisans and products that are represented at our events.

Art in the Park Festivals are held in Main Street Park, at the Junction of Routes 4 & 7 in the heart of Rutland. This major crossroads in central Vermont provides a significant market for drive-by traffic. The show already brings traffic from the Central Vermont population with the addition of the tourists who travel Route 4 and 7, with estimated attendance of 7,000 to 9,000. Art in the Park has been voted one of “Vermont’s Top Ten Events” by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, named one of the “Sunshine Artist 200 Best,” and voted Rutland Herald’s Best of the Best in the category of the Best Arts Festival.

Vendor information and applications can be printed from the Chaffee’s new website . The website will become a new tool to maintain communication with our vendors and the general public. As artisans are accepted, names will be posted on the Art in the Park information page with a link to the vendor’s website. This new feature brings added value by driving traffic to your website in advance of the shows. It’s a great reason to apply early and take advantage of this free publicity. Check out the website often for updates and new information.

Don’t delay. Space will be allocated on a first come, first served basis so we encourage you to submit your application in a timely manner. Application deadline for the August show is March 31, 2011 and August 15, 2011 for the October show. Discounts are provided if you commit to both shows by March 31, 2011. Vendors will be notified if accepted into the show(s). Together, let’s make 50th Art in the Park a celebration to remember! Visit www.chaffeeartcenter.org or call 802-775-0356 for more information.

CALL TO ARTISTS: Care Canvas in Montpelier

After potentially $44 million in Human Services state budget cuts, how will we care for our most vulnerable Vermonters?

REACH Care Bank & The City of Montpelier are sponsoring a Care Canvas Art Sale inspired by the theme "Who Cares?"

REACH Care Bank has 125 small 4"x4" canvases to give out to individuals who are inspired to create a work in any medium to donate to the cause. Works may be displayed, reproduced, and used by the Care Bank as cards, magnets, posters, bookmarks, etc. to raise funds for the support of REACH, a grassroots health and wellness network of volunteers using time as currency.

Similar to Time Banking, Care Banking is an innovative way to support people who want to stay living at home, who need basic support services, and are also willing to give back to the network for each hour of service they receive. More and more neighbors who haven't met yet are learning how to care for each other, and joining the Care Bank, which gives structure to this natural process.

Consider the following for inspiration:

Who cares for you?
Who or what do you care about?
What does "caring for someone" look like? Feel like?
How do you show you care?
How do you know you're cared about?

Free canvases are available at REACH Care Bank, on 138 Main St. Suite 6 in downtown Montpelier (in the red brick Victorian directly across from Trinity Church). Canvases may also be mailed to interested parties.

CALL TO ARTISTS: Older Visual Artists in Washington, Lamoille, and Orange Counties

Central Vermont Council on Aging (CVCOA) will once again present The Art of Creative Aging in celebration of Older Americans Month in May. The Art of Creative Aging is a juried exhibit of current work of older visual artists (70+) living in Washington, Lamoille and Orange counties. The show will be on display May 1st through June 30th at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier.

Interested artists will submit digital photographs of up to three art works for review by the jury. The deadline for digital submissions is March 1st. All work chosen for the exhibit will be for sale by silent auction. Artists will establish a minimum bid considering 40% of the sale for CVCOA.

A reception will be held at the library on Thursday, May 5th, 4:30 - 7:00 pm to meet the artists. The silent auction of the artwork will begin that evening, and continue throughout the two-month exhibit.

Digital submissions are to be sent to Margaret Harmon at mharmon@cvcoa.org . She may be reached at 802-229-0624 for more information.

Last year, the Art of Creative Aging inaugural exhibit featured 26 artists. The 43 pieces of artwork on display included sculptures, photographs, oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors, pastels, collages, monoprints, and quilted wall hangings. The Vermont Art Zine defined the artists' work as "lively, expressive, creative and full of life."

Central Vermont Council on Aging (CVCOA) supports elders in leading healthy, independent and dignified lives in the homes and communities in 54 central Vermont towns. Visit the CVCOA website at www.cvcoa.org or call the Senior Helpline at 1-800-642-5119. Our office is located at 30 Washington Street in Barre.
