Restoring a Farmhouse

A fabulous (and fast) before and after happening over at Aesthetic Outburst today. Abbey whipped up their new farmhouse dining room into shape in record time, creating a most desired aesthetic I might add. Love the thrifted lighting and that wool rug at a local (to her) store called Nasco Home not to mention the refinished hardwood flooring!

A Day at the Beach with Gallant & Jones

Contributor post by Janis of Pinecone Camp

Hi all! Janis here, from Pinecone Camp. I had the opportunity to shoot, once again, with the talented women behind Gallant & Jones. The two of them design and build, a line of beautiful beach and garden chairs as well as camp stools and trays. I'm the proud owner of a few of their chairs and stools and I love them! So comfortable, and perfect in the back yard with a g&t. ;)

Our shoot took place at a Vancouver beach and the nearby park. The day was a bit cool, but the lighting was pretty. We had two fabulous "models", Tanis, owner of the fabulous Bao Bei, and Elisa from appleturnover-homemade stories.

Nothing like a picnic shoot, where you can actually eat and drink the props! Wish all my shoots were like that. Sigh.

Have a great day!
janis

Inspiration: The Backyard Urban Cottage

Every summer I'm inspired by outdoor spaces and backyard cottages.  I've been collecting images of them for a bit now (see here and here) and hopefully one day will be able to create a space outdoors for the summer ourselves.  In the meantime I continue to collect inspiration.  This time from the latest issue of Covet Magazine and the backyard urban cottage of publisher Vicki and daughters Lily and Piper.  By clearing out the clutter, Vickit turned her garage into a summer time space they call the Beach House that comes complete with a loft for sleepovers. DIY Sliding Barn Door

Last week we showed you her DIY Wooden "Love" Headboard, and this week we're equally loving their DIY Sliding Barn Door that accompanies the headboard in the bedroom. Dana at House*Tweaking and her handy hubby created the door from more salvaged fence boards from his late grandmother's farm with a little bit of help with some hardware from Crown Industrial (out of San Francisco) and some great yellow paint from Sherwin Williams (Auric).

Click here for the DIY and here on how to hang it.

Light and Bright: Scandinavia Meets California

I love this  Cape Cod–style cottage featured in House Beautiful this month (February issue). Located in Venice, California, designer Alexandra Angle mixed checks and stripes along with Swedish and Queen Anne–style furniture to create a bright and cheery space.  The home walls once enclosed with textured drywall has now been replaced with beadboard giving it a Scandinavian summer style.  With white flooring and light fabrics, the room has a bright and relaxed inviting vibe.  Photo's by Victoria Pearson.

Inspired by antique Swedish–style stoves, Alexandra came up with the idea of tiling the wall with antique Portuguese tiles, taking it all the way up to the ceiling, making it more of a focal point.

The upper-cabinets were replaced by open shelving (paint  Farrow & Ball's Teresa Green) and bronze finished bin pulls and knobs (by Rejuvination).  Angle said in reference to the pulls, "You can get too airy.  You need something dark to keep a room grounded".

Love the different textures of patio furniture.  Teak, a faux-bois concrete bench, floor pillows...

The bedroom has a real summery vibe pulling in again the Scandinavian–theme with some light cotton bedding in cool blue hues.

Inspiration from Rue

A little inspiration today from the December issue of Rue Magazine. A few spaces I'm liking. Above and just below: Farmhouse Modern, Chicago home of interior designer, Angela Stone. And below that, the home of Lingerie Designer, Jesse Zinke.
