In the Lime Light...

Lime is fresh,vibrant, cheery, bright and just about the best summer color out there.

It has major pop factor and leaves no one feeling indifferent.
You either love it or you hate it.

It looks fabulous as an accent color against smokey grays, bright red,
chocolate brown and makes a big impact in an all-white room.

Lime reminds me of being in the tropics and just makes me smile.

If you're looking to add life and vigor to a space, lime is definitely the way to go!

Green is the new Black ...

Have any of you checked out HGTV's Green Home 2011? If not, you absolutely must - it's a work of (sustainable) art. Before getting into green design, let me give you some background on the GENIUS who designed the inside of this home. Linda Woodrum is a giant in the interior design world, she is the mastermind behind every HGTV Dream Home (each one may I add, is better than the last), she was the Design Consultant at Coastal Living magazine for 7 years, her work has been featured in every national design publication you can think of, and she has designed interiors for significant homes throughout the United States. Linda is one of my favorite designers because she puts an incredible amount of consideration into every single square inch of her designs. The spaces she creates are not only spectacular, they are functional and gear towards everyday life.

When designing a green home, use as many natural materials as you can. Consider using natural stone countertops, sustainable woods such as bamboo and eucalyptus as cabinetry and look for water-saving shower heads and toilets. Another trick is to shop locally. If you buy a product that was made in China, a lot more energy was spent getting it to your house than if you were to buy something that was made locally. Little adjustments such as the aforementioned really make a big difference in the long run so do your part!

Oh, Baby!

Nurseries are fun spaces to design because they allow you to think outside the box and push you to explore the depths of your creativity. Since baby rooms are meant to be lighthearted and whimsical, you're not limited to conventional colors, fabrics or accessories. Feel free to use bold prints, bright colors and textural fabrics. One of the most charming baby rooms I have ever seen has silver birch trees hand-painted onto charcoal walls, mustard yellow curtains, a bright turquoise armchair and a zebra print area rug. I know it sounds a little wild but it actually comes together beautifully! Upon browsing the following pics, I found myself incredibly inspired to design a baby room even though I don't have kids. Having said that, I do have a Boston Terrier that could easily fit into one of those cribs! Hmmm.....

Designer of the Week: Tommy Smythe...

Tommy Smythe is an unspeakably talented interior designer who's creations regularly grace the pages of House & Home, Style at Home and countless other design publications. He has worked alongside one of Canada's biggest talents Sarah Richardson for numerous years and together, they have become a design powerhouse to be reckoned with. Just like the rest of Canada, I have gotten to know and love Tommy by watching him on shows such as Design Inc, Sarah's House, Sarah's Cottage and most recently, Sarah 101. While watching Tommy in the aforementioned shows I've come to realize 2 things; 1- he has beautiful, lighthearted and hilarious personality and 2- he is the embodiment of interior design. What I mean by that is, Tommy truly and genuinely lives, breathes and eats interior design. No matter how many funny jokes or puns he makes, his respect, admiration and thorough knowledge of his domain always shines brighter. What fascinates me most about him is while his on screen personality is upbeat, colorful and bubbly his designs are moody, dark and slightly more on the traditional side. Like Sarah, he has mastered the art of combining bold patterns and soft textures, old and new, traditional and contemporary... I guess my only criticism is that I'd love to see more of Tommy's individual creative process. Here's my plea to HGTV: can someone please get him his own show already??? Or better yet, how about a show called Sarah vs. Tommy which would allow the viewer to witness both designers' different approaches manifest from A to Z. Hey, just throwing it out there!

Designer of the week: Sarah Richardson...

In my opinion, there aren't many interior designers who come close to being as talented as our fellow Canadian Sarah Richardson. I started following her career years ago when she was virtually unknown and am blown away at how much she’s accomplished in such a short period of time. Sarah, who started her career behind the scenes (literally) as a set decorator, is in the process of building an empire.

Mark my words: She will become the Canadian equivalent of Martha Stewart.

Sarah’s portfolio is too big to summarize in a blog such as this one but here are a few career highlights:

To say that I am a big Sarah Richardson fan is an understatement. I have watched every single one of her shows and have come to the conclusion that she can do no wrong.

Sarah is a master of spacial conception and organization, she creates the most original color schemes and is the only person who can make 25 different fabrics work cohesively together.

Sarah if you're reading this, a magazine is obviously the next step in your career... Please make it happen!!!
